The 221A Fellowship is an 18-month (non-residential) studio placement at 825 Pacific Street created to support artists historically excluded from arts and culture. Fellows are recognized for their unique social role; reflecting on and reimagining the consequences and possibilities of current and future societal infrastructure.
A cohort of three Fellows are selected by an external, all-BIPOC jury of mid-career and established artists. Over the course of the program, Fellows share knowledge, collaborate, and deliver publicly accessible talks and workshops which culminate into a final presentation that can take the form of a performance, exhibition, research project, event, podcast, web series, or other format.
As one of Canada’s most generous studio-placement awards, the Fellowship includes a fully subsidized studio, a $72,000 CAD stipend, and $10,000 CAD in project funding—acting as a call to standardize a living wage for artists in the city.
