221A Fellowship Opens Call for $216,000 in Artist Studio Awards

January 31, 2024

Vancouver, January 31, 2024 — The call for nominations is now open for the 221A Fellowship, offering three 18-month non-residential studio placement awards to support artistic creation with a trifecta of essentials: time, space, and money.

Each artist will receive a $72,000 stipend to develop online and in-person cultural outputs, such as talks, exhibitions, workshops, film screenings, podcasts, and digital works. The studios will offer cross-pollination between Fellows, hosted at a new facility at 825 Pacific Street.

"The groundwork for the 221A Fellowships is based on our imagination of what this opportunity would have meant to us as artists,” says Kwiigay iiwaans, who, in addition to collaboratively leading 221A’s artistic vision as Head of Programs, is a multidisciplinary artist exploring decolonial 2SQTIBIPOC futurisms. “In times of catastrophe and crisis, we need art to guide us and act as our collective memory.”

“221A continues to model what it takes to keep artists in our city,” says Ingrid Valou, an interdisciplinary artist and economic development professional who serves on the Board of 221A and as President of the Vancouver Metal Arts Association. “This Fellowship program sets a high-water mark: a living wage, access to safe and inspiring creative spaces, and a supportive environment for launching and accelerating artist careers.”

Initially launched in 2017 as an alternative to the standard exhibition or commission model, 221A’s strategic vision is to make the Fellowship a priority. Through the support of additional funders, the awards has potential to draw, not only national, but global contributions to some of the world’s leading art creators. Fellow placements are scheduled to commence in Summer 2024, allowing selected artists to embark on a creative journey that combines financial support with a dedicated studio space.

To be eligible, artists must be 19 years of age or older, identify as low income, and reside in, or temporarily relocate to, the Lower Mainland. To apply or learn more about the 221A Fellowship, visit 221a.ca/fellows. The deadline for nominations is March 2, 2024.
