221A is thrilled to welcome Kiyoshi Whitley and Reiko Pleau to the team.
Kiyoshi Whitley is the Building Technician at 221A and is responsible for completing maintenance tasks and overseeing the quality of the facilities. Whitley graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University. He has 20 years' experience in residential construction and renovation, which informs his art practice. He has worked extensively as a fabricator and art installer for various artist-run organizations. In his spare time, he enjoys baseball, films, and a casual chess game with his friends.
Transitioning from their role as a 221A Board Member, Reiko Pleau will be joining as a Summer Intern, thanks to funding from the MITACS Accelerate program and collaboration with Blockchain@UBC. Their research project explores Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), a decentralized system where transactions are recorded securely and transparently. As outlined in 221A’s Digital Strategy, this research will support community members in arts and cultural organizations to have equitable access to emerging technology.
The project also welcomes Hypha Worker Co-operative as a technical collaborator. As an organization that works with communities to build better relationships with technology, we look forward to growing technical capacities within the arts alongside Reiko’s expertise.
Please help us in welcoming Kiyoshi and Reiko!
