221A is pleased to announce its participation in documenta 14’s aneducation program at Under the Mango Tree—Sites of Learning. Vincent Tao, 221A’s librarian, travels to Kassel to present and workshop the organization’s forthcoming educational programming. In 2016, Tao initiated a collective research residency at 221A titled Notes on Political Ecologies (N.O.P.E.). The conclusions of the residency will be published this Autumn in Art Worker’s Introductory Guide to Post-Olympics Chinatown and Downtown Eastside.
221A shifts its educational programming at a time when the structures of formal education systems are increasingly reaching their productive and epistemological limits. documenta 14’s aneducation and ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) present Under the Mango Tree—Sites of Learning, a gathering that addresses contemporary shifts in education by inviting artistic initiatives and schools from multiple geographies to Kassel. Participants will share current practices and historical accounts of communal knowledge production and preservation, with emphasis on nonhierarchical models of learning.
Organized by Sepake Angiama, Head of Education, documenta 14 and Elke aus dem Moore, Head of Visual Art, ifa, the gathering brings together some twenty contributors working towards new vantage points for a broadened understanding of learning and knowledge production. Their work is presented in forms ranging from lectures to performances and workshops, in which active participation is welcome. Drawing on the model of a communal garden as a place of teaching and learning, the gathering takes place at the Kunsthochschule and across various sites in Kassel.
Contributing individuals, organizations, initiatives, and schools include: Óscar Andrade Castro and Daniela Salgado Cofré (Ciudad Abierta); David Chirwa (Rockston Studio 1985); Sanchayan Ghosh (Santiniketan); Rangoato Hlasane (Keleketla! Library), Anton Kats (Narrowcast House); Duane Linklater, Tanya Lukin Linklater, and cheyanne turions (Wood Land School); Sofía Olascoaga; Alessandra Pomarico (Free Home University), Marcelo Rezende; Syafiatudina (KUNCI); Jorge I. González Santos (Escuela de Oficio); Marinella Senatore (The School of Narrative Dance); and others.
