Vanessa Kwan

Vanessa Kwan is a Vancouver-based artist and a 2012-13 Curatorial Resident at 221A. Her work has been exhibited at a number of galleries and artist-run centres, including solo exhibitions at the Or Gallery, Access Artist Run Centre, and the Art Gallery of the South Okanagan. Her writing has appeared in publications such as the Georgia Straight, Fuse magazine, C Contemporary and Canadian Art. Her curatorial practice has extended to galleries, performance spaces and cinemas, and she has curated projects for the Richmond Art Gallery (“Black Hole is Also Super Nova”, 2009),the Powell Street Festival (“Spatial Poetics: Some Monster,” 2012), the Vancouver Queer Film Festival (as Director of Programming 2006-2008) and the Vancouver Art Gallery (where she is currently programmer for performance and interdisciplinary events). Much of her practice has extended into the public realm, and as an artist she has completed a number of works in public space, including the recently launched Geyser for Hillcrest Park (with Erica Stocking), commissioned by the City of Vancouver, and as a founding member of the collective Norma, who were honoured with a Mayor’s Arts Award for Public Art in 2011.
