John Culbert teaches in the French Program and the Department of English at UBC. A graduate of UC Berkeley, he previously taught at UC Irvine and Scripps College, Claremont, California. He is the author of Paralyses: Literature, Travel and Ethnography in French Modernity, winner of the 2011 Modern Language Association prize for French studies, as well as many articles on media, tourism, sexuality, postcolonialism and cultural politics. In addition to his scholarly work, Culbert is a writer of fiction, and since 2012 he has been running a blog on literature, language and culture at The Purgatory Press.
