Expression of Interest: Organizational Tenants for Shared Production/Rehearsal Space

Expression of Interest: Organizational Tenants for Shared Production/Rehearsal Space

December 20, 2024

221A is seeking expressions of interest from arts and culture non-profit organizations interested in joining a dynamic, shared production and rehearsal space at 177 E 3rd Avenue, Vancouver, BC.

The city-owned facility is a Class B-zoned artist studio operated by 221A on a 60-year lease, in collaboration with the Community Land Trust of BC. We are excited to be working alongside C-Space to develop the operational model for the shared space, and to recruit and onboard new tenants.

Our Vision

We envision a vibrant shared production, rehearsal and multi-purpose facility that serves as a hub for artistic practice and education. By pooling resources and working collaboratively, this space will empower organizations to foster meaningful connections among members of the Mount Pleasant community. 221A is currently undertaking upgrades to the interior of the facility to maximize community use of the space, and aims to have the space operational by Summer 2025.

Facility Overview

  • 2,700ft² multi-purpose space suitable for creation, rehearsals, meetings, and events, including a shared outdoor plaza. Current upgrades to the facility will provide for improved storage, event space area and seating and gathering spaces. Please see the attached functional program drawings, which are subject to change.
  • Flexible, functional design tailored to meet the needs of diverse arts organizations, including educational, performing and visual arts groups, and anything in between.
  • Shared amenities such as a spray booth, washout sinks, storage, and a rehearsal studio, aimed at reducing costs and maximizing utility for all members.
  • Four secured parking spots dedicated to organizational tenants.

Operational Features

  • Membership structure designed for easy access to designated time in shared spaces, ensuring flexibility and equitable use.
  • Transparent and affordable rental rates based on operational cost-recovery, with initial rates ranging from $1,000–$1,500 per month
  • Collaborative model and collective decision-making about space and resources.

Current Collaborators

The production space will be shared with youth-centred organization Ethós Lab and resident artists who live in the adjacent artist housing. As a tenant, you will have the opportunity to interact and connect with the tenant community.

Open House Tours

Tours of the facility are available upon request or during designated open house dates on January 20 and 27, 2025. Please email racheal@c-space.ca for open hour details or to schedule a tour.
