Lisa Marshall

Lisa Marshall is an artist, graphic designer and writer based in Vancouver, Canada. Earning a Master's degree in Art History from the University of British Columbia, Marshall's research focused on the ever-changing relationship between the fields of art and design over the course of the 20th century. As an undergraduate student at Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design, she studied both fields in a direct way, continuing on to work professionally as a graphic designer while remaining intrigued by art, design and writing, a fascination that eventually took her back to university to pursue a Master's degree. Marshall's writing has been published in Fillip and Canadian Art. She has recently completed a Writer's Residency at Artspeak Gallery with the soon-to-be-released outcome, Play: A Postscript to Behind the Sign in Three Acts, a historical study that bleeds into the present through dialogue and the postulation of a set design. The project began with a series of interviews starting with a pivotal point for art and text in Vancouver in the early '80s when some writers who formed Kootenay School of Writing and some visual artists coalesced into a discursive community where casual conversation, formal talks and a variety of texts played a significant role, informing both visual arts and literary practices. The effects have flowed into the present in interesting and often-contested ways. Currently Marshall is Editor for Art in the Wake of the Komagata Maru, a publication to come out of the Surrey Art Gallery’s exhibition Ruptures in Arrival and the symposium Disfiguring Identity. She is a recipient of several awards including an undergraduate scholarship from Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design and grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the British Columbia Arts Council.
