Featuring work by Vancouver artists, photographers, enthusiasts as well as the general public, the Low Tech Photo Show explored the fantastic world of plastic cameras and analog photography. Whether acquired as toys, self-constructed, vintage or disposable, low tech cameras allow users to experiment and photograph freely at any possible setting.

As digital technology advances at a rapid rate, the photographers in the show take a step back and investigate analog photography in some of its most basic forms. The technical limitations of the cameras leads to unexpected results, and the softness of the lenses infuses images with surreal qualities. This exhibit questions the status of the photographer by blending works by participants from various backgrounds. One participant submitted photographs taken with a disposable camera of concrete tubes from his work area. Although he stated to seldom photograph, these images became documents of the architecture surrounding him. The accessibility and low cost factor make the low tech cameras great tools for consumers and artists alike, generating exciting dialogues between snapshots and fine art photography.
The exhibit aims to establish relationships between a wide range of photographic approaches. A large number of submissions were reviewed by a jury, then selected to highlight each photographer’s practices.

Photographs are arranged in a salon style, emerging above and below an imaginary horizon on the gallery walls to express a sense of flow. Each print is placed in relation to others loosely according to subject matter, colour, scale, and orientation. In a way the collaging of images in the gallery mimics the work of a disc jockey who relates sounds and sequences rhythms to produce a specific ambience. Each photograph in the exhibit links to the next resulting in spontaneous narratives. The selected images become condensed capsules of the photographers’ perspectives and unique experiences.
